From the Pet Sounds album, this song sees the Beach Boys move from their happy-boppy-surfing persona into a more three-dimensional and emotionally engaged world. When it was first released it was much more successful in the UK than in America, though it has come to be recognised as a real landmark in twentieth-century popular music. The arrangement was commissioned to sing at a wedding.
